  Aunt Maud and Uncle Jack never had children, although they had a succession of nasty-tempered West Highland terriers - the last one (Kim) being bequeathed to my Mum on Maud's death. At first, Kim was a force to be reckoned with - even just trying to attach his leash could get you a ferocious nip. Patience (or lack of it) prevailed and Kim eventually became the dog he was supposed to be and lived with us until his death at 15 or 16 years old. To understand the temperament of Maud and Jack's dogs, you have to understand that each was treated (or spoiled) worse than any child could have been. Visits were always accompanied by a hold-all containing "the dog of the day's" face-cloth and monogrammed towels (the dog always had his face and hands washed after walking on the streets, and a chair was lugged into the bathroom so he could reach the sink), Slippery Elm Food for pre-bed drink, 7 Cadbury Chocolate Buttons, bowls, shin of beef or chicken breast (preferably topped with sliced runner beans)... Oh, the list was endless...
