OBITUARY - EX-CHIEF INSPECTOR JAMES BERRETT
The death of ex-Chief Inspector James Berrett removes one of the most picturesque personalities ever associated with Scotland Yard. A stout, heavily-built man, who from the time he was a young detective wore a beard, he was more like a character of fiction than a real-life crime investigator, and it is recorded of him that he never once attempted to disguise himself. His most famous case was the murder of PC Gutteridge, the Essex policeman, for which Brown and Kennedy were hanged. Another case of which he had charge was the murder of Jacob Dickie, a taxi-cab driver, in Brixton.
In private life "Jim" Berrett was a kindly man, who gave every encouragement to detectives serving under him. His hobby - rose growing - was an index to his natural inclination for simple persuits. He died at the age of 59, having retired from Scotland Yard nine years ago. For many years he was in charge of Brixton Division.

OBITUARY - EX-CHIEF INSPECTOR BERRETT
Death of noted Detective
Ex-Chief Inspector Berrett, who retired from the Metropolitan Police nine years ago, died on Friday of last week. From the time he was a young detective he wore a beard and he was one of Scotland Yard's most pictureque figures, being known throughout the Force as "Big Jim".
He was in charge of the inquiries into the murder of PC Gutteridge, which eventually led to Browne and Kennedy being arrested and executed. Among other of his notable cases were the investigations into the murder of Alfred Oliver, the Reading tobacconist, and the Warsop (Notts) murder, in which a commercial traveller was found shot dead in his car by the roadside.
Chief Inspector Berrett was stationed in the Brixton Division for many years, where all his spare time was spent in the rose garden at his house in Balham.
Those who served under him in the CID will recall with gratitude the helpful advice and encouragement he was always ready to give.

- One of the first cases James Berrett was involved with was a notorious Hyde Park assault case. Two guardsmen nearly murdered a man, and one of the assailants received ten years. The other man turned informer. Another case concerned a schoolmaster and his pupils, the accused receiving a long term of imprisonment.
