  		East Sheen - 31 Bexhill Road When Fred, Marjorie and Ada lived here the house was an end of terrace with a garage. After Fred's death the house was sold, and the land which held the garage and side garden was sold for development. 31 Bexhill is now described as a 'mid terrace' as an additional house has been added between 31 and the railway line!   Frederick Noel Pullen Eulogy By Maureen Grimwood Fred was born on the 25th of December 1913 at 72 Overstone Road in Hammersmith, the eldest of two sons born to Ada and Fred Pullen. His brother Roy was born five years later. Shortly after the outbreak of the First World War, Fred's father joined the army and his mother went to work in a munitions factory in Wandsworth As Aunt Maud, the wife of Fred Barrett, Adas brother, looked after baby Freddie during the daytime he spent much of his early years with his young cousins John and Honor Berrett. John Berrett, now 93, can remember that around 1919 the highlight of his and Fred's life was when the two boys were taken for a ride in a car driven by Fred Pullen senior, who was then working as a chauffeur. Fred's family moved to Acton where his father's family ran a laundry in an area known as “soapsud island”. Fred's great friend Monica relates that Fred said that he was particularly fond of his paternal grandfather, and enjoyed helping to groom his grandfathers horses used for delivering the freshly laundered washing to customers. Fred's parents then moved to Finsbury Park, before finally settling in East Sheen to share a house in Avenue Gardens with his mother's sister, Flo Ling and her daughters. Fred was raised within an extended family of his many cousins, aunts and uncles. There were many family parties where each relative provided the entertainment by singing their song. Second cousin Maureen recollects him saying that his favourite aunt was her grandmother, his mother's sister, Auntie Lil Stevens, who was always so jolly and good fun. Fred was to spend the remainder of his life as a resident of East Sheen. He and Marjorie married in the early years of World War 2. His cousins remember Fred and Marjorie as being quite a striking couple due to Marjorie's love of style and fashion. As a soldier, he established a lasting friendship with a family in the north of England, who opened their home to him and an army friends after a chance meeting. He served abroad spending much of his service time as an Officer's Batman. In 1944 he was part of the force who fought the long battle to gain control of Monte Cassino. Fred, Marjorie and his mother moved from 61 St Leonards Road to 31 Bexhill Road around 1957. Fred inherited his interest in motorcycling from his father. Monica says Fred told her he used to ride his bike to Scotland to compete in competitions, winning cups for several events. He and Marjorie were keen members of a motorbike club for many years. At one time Marjorie rode in his sidecar. Second cousin Cath remembers when she was young that Fred shouted at her when she accidentally knocked his motorbike over! Another childhood memory is from second cousin Michael, who recollects Fred and Marjorie taking him to a motor bike scramble one Boxing Day, with all the group getting covered in mud whilst watching from the sidelines. Fred was multi-talented man who through employment gained skills as a butcher and an upholsterer. He retired from his last job at the Roehampton Limb Centre when he was 70. Sadly, Marjorie died in 1986. Fred was very close to all generations of the Dovey family, Marjories cousins who run a poultry farm in Hampshire. In recent years he was a valued member of the team preparing the Turkey orders for Christmas. He and Monica maintained a close friendship with his brother Roy and wife June, and spent holidays at Roy and June's home in Spain. Roy died last year. We remember Fred as a modest, loyal, quiet man. He was always caring and always available for others. He was a private person, who sometimes had a short fuse! Newcomers to Bexhill Road found Fred to be a willing neighbour, ever ready to lend a hand in any way. He was always supportive when family members were ill. He had an extensive knowledge on so many subjects and had the ability to do so many things; he was a capable decorator, an able car and motorbike mechanic and he loved to grow plants from seed. He always appreciated anything anyone did for him and would say “I never forget a kindness”. In hospital he said he had had a good life but had no wish to live any longer. He would have hated to be continually dependent on others. Fred liked “music to get your feet tapping” and particularly enjoyed the group ABBA. We like to think he would have enjoyed this service. We hope you will join us for refreshments and a bite to eat at the East Sheen Baptist Church in Temple Sheen Road, organised by his cousin Muriel and her daughter Linda. (No alcohol or smoking allowed in the hall.) Fred's wish was for his ashes to be placed in Bramshaw church in his beloved New Forest. IN THE HIGH COURT OF JUSTICE The District Probate Registry at Winchester BE IT KNOWN that FREDERICK NOEL PULLEN of 31 Bexhill Road East Sheen London SW14 7NF died on the 7th day of December 2002 domiciled in England and Wales AND BE IT FURTHER KNOWN that the last Will and Testament of the said deceased (a copy of which is annexed) was proved and registered in the High Court of Justice and that Administration of all the estates which by law devolves to and vests in the personal representatives o the said deceased by the said Court on this date to the Executor.
