The following Tribute was read at John's funeral which took place at Mansfield Road Baptist Church, Nottingham, on May 3rd 2006: John was born in Hammersmith, London, in 1909. He had two sisters, Honor, who died in 1988, and Muriel, who is with us today. After leaving school he joined the Merchant Navy, sailing from London to New York where he spent his 18th birthday. After leaving the Merchant Navy he trained to be a Plumber, later working with his father. At this time he joined West End Baptist Church in Hammersmith and eventually became a Boys Brigade Officer. He enjoyed the BB and often took the boys out on country walks teaching them about trees, of which he had a great interest. John joined the Air Force and eventally was stationed in Lincolnshire as a member of the ground crew. The airfield was adjacent to a farm. On his first Sunday in Lincolnshire, he went to the Methodist Church at Great Steeping and was invited to supper by one of the members... who happened to be the owner of the farm adjoining the airfield, and this was the beginning of a life-long friendship. One daughter remains and John was in regular contact with her. During his two years in Lincolnshire, he spent almost all his spare time helping the farmer feed the pigs, often preparing their food, or mending fences and gates. He was in his element helping on the farm. So much so that, when he returned to London after his discharge from the Air Force, he found it very difficult to settle down. After two years back in London, he took a job as a mechanic on a farm in Essex, taking with him his wife, Rachel, and two year old daughter, Angela, in order to get away from London. He joined the Congregational Church in Henham as there was no Baptist church nearby. Later, he moved from Henham to Stansted, where he was a deacon for over 30 years until he again moved to Nottingham. After working on the farm for four years, he went to work at Stansted Airport, where he was an airframe fitter for almost 28 years. During this time his work took him to Germany, Singapore, Rabat and also various parts of the UK, including Widmerpool near Nottingham. During these visits his close friend, Buster, was with him and Buster is here today. John retired in 1978 and a month later his wife, Rachel, died. In 1980 he met Phyllis, whilst on holiday in Jersey, and they were married in Mansfield Road Baptist Church. They would have celebrated 25 happy and fulfilling years together in June this year. In 1982 his first grandchild, Lucinda, was born followed in 1984 by Jonathan - who was the first boy to be born on the Berrett side of the family for 75 years! John was a keen advocate of blood donations and he received a gold award for donating 50 pints. His love of gardening was his main hobby and he would spend many hours tending his plants in the garden and greenhouse, producing vegetables which he would then bring into the house and prepare for the pot. He was also interested in classical music and had a great knowledge of composers and their works. Travel was another interest and, as a surprise 80th birthday gift from the families, he and Phyllis travelled on Concord. He was an invaluable member of the company rambling club as he was able to identify items of flora and fauna en route and was a fund of informarion on natural history. He was a very devoted officer and if given a job could be left to see it through. CHURCH John was baptised as a baby at St Paul's Church Hammersmith. As a teenager he attended WEST END CHAPEL in Hammersmith where he was a member of the Boys' Brigade. He introduced his youngest sister to the Sunday School and youth activities at West End. In 1937 John and Rachel were married at West End and were members there until they moved to Essex. Whilst living in Henham, John and Rachel attended the Congregational Chapel in the village and lived in the chapel's Manse in return for helping with the maintenance of the chapel. After their move to Stansted, they became members of the Congregational Church in Stansted. After Rachel's death, John moved to Nottingham having met Phyllis on a Saga holiday in Jersey. They were married at Phyllis' church, Mansfield Road Baptist Church, in 1982. John remained in membership there until his death. A few members of the family always referred to John as 'Jack', especially his mother's side of the family. However, to his wife, sisters and brother-in-laws he was always known as John.
