  I loved Aunt Rose. She was the 'grandmother' I never knew. She used to come and stay with us sometimes at weekends and one of my earliest memories is of being allowed to walk up the road, on my own, to meet her off the bus. In my mind, she is always dressed in a pale blue coat, a dark blue hat and she is carrying a small navy blue suitcase. When Dad was working on a Saturday, Mum and I used to go and visit her at Shepherds Bush. This was always a real treat as we had to take the bus to Hammersmith and then catch the Metropolitan line to Goldhawk Road. (Many years later, when doing the same journey in rush hour in order to get to work, the attraction wasn't quite the same!) This was the mid-1960s and she lived in a small block of flats for the elderly in Sycamore Gardens, Shepherds Bush. She was on the first floor and had a tiny kitchen (containing little more than a stove, a stone sink and a cupboard) and one main room, which had a dining room table at one end and a big double bed at the other. No sofa or comfy chairs and no TV. I seem to recall she sat at the table on some kind of wooden settle. She also had a loo (I think!) but had to share a bathroom on the landing with other residents. In her kitchen cupboard she always had a small pair of scales, and lots of jars containing split peas, harricot beans, lentils and a variety of other dry goods. She would collect small paper bags for me (the kind you would get with a quarter or penn'oth of sweets) and I would spend hours happily playing shops! When she was able, Aunt Rose used to love taking trips up to London, by herself, wandering around St Paul's and various other places that took her fancy. Rose lived to a ripe old age. She ate a boiled onion and drank a bottle of stout every day! A favourite meal of hers was boiled belly pork "with the buttons on".
