  Euology for Eric Grimwood by Maureen Grimwood Joanne and I have been so heartened by all your kind thoughts. Thank you so much for your support and for taking time to come here. The Grimwoods and their families are recognisable by their black and white ribbon tags. Others present are neighbours, my relatives and many friends. The service is conducted by the Reverend Hazel O'Sullivan, the vicar at Whiteley Village. Eric was one of the 15 children of Harry and Rose Grimwood of Holyport Road, Fulham. As one can imagine, times were hard and money was short but the Grimwoods had standards and they all always said theirs was a happy home. Although their clothes were poor, their tummies were full. Their Dad used to walk from Fulham to work in a dairy at Acton and supplemented the food from his allotment by making brawn, cream cheese and pickled onions. There were plenty of laughs but Eric's Mum wasn't very sympathetic to young Eric when he was given a cauliflower ear by the Ice Cream man for shouting, “Nick Nick, give us one on tick”. It was a childhood where fun was your own making and carts were made from pram wheels and wooden crates. Eric's cart went as far as Coombe Woods, the return run down Putney Hill providing the thrills. Climbing on the backs of lorries for a free lift was a days' outing. His first bike was built from old parts. By his early teens he and his friends were cycling for a couple of hours every evening. They would even cycle down to the coast and camp overnight. Choice of Sunday school tended to be dictated by which one had an outing or party coming up. Eric supplemented his penny a week pocket money by selling buckets of fresh horse manure to local residents, delivering ice to the fish shop and doing a paper round. His enterprising side was shown by climbing the walls of Mortlake Brewery to get empty bottles, and getting a penny refund per bottle from the off-licence. He wore glasses from the age of three, his poor eye sight being the result of suffering from measles. The disadvantage of wearing glasses was that he was easily recognisable when he was up to no good... people would say, “I know you, you're the one with glasses”. Eric was always good at Maths, although he found it very difficult to write down his calculations as he did them in his head. At the age of 12, he won a Trade scholarship to Hammersmith School of Building but his education was interrupted by World War II. He and younger brothers John and David were evacuated to Loudwater, Buckinghamshire where Eric scrumped fruit and enjoyed the dangers of going into in the long train tunnel and gripping the walls as the train travelled through. After a few months he returned to London to start full-time work. Umpteen different jobs followed. At the age of 17 he became a driver after investing in two ten shilling driving lessons. He always loved driving. He was called up into the Army in December 1942. It was so cold during the initial training at Beverley, Yorkshire that the water froze in the camp and he had to put his spectacles in his shoes overnight to stop ice forming on the lenses. A suggestion that his hammer toes could prove a way out of the Army backfired when he was graded B6 and excused boots having to wear plimsolls on army exercises. Graded B6, his service was restricted to England, working on ammunition dumps, controlling rations - some of the excess finding its way to Mrs Grimwoods larder - and latterly guarding German prisoners of war. Eric supplemented his meagre Army pay by doing casual work in Fulham during home leaves building temporary shops for Coventry, fire watching and working in factories. Army life suited him; he signed on for a further six months and reflected that he should have signed on for longer. Demobbed in 1948 as a corporal on the same day as brother John, they spent the next couple of weeks drinking their gratuity away. Finding it difficult to adapt to working indoors, he joined brother Les to work on a building site. Subsequent employments were as a postman, driver and working on car batteries. He became a Post Office Telephone Engineer in 1956. He retired from the renamed BT in 1989, at the age of 65, having reached the grade of Senior Technician. A keen ballroom dancer, he was awarded a bronze then silver medal. At one time he was dancing six nights per week. He was always a keen supporter of Fulham Football Club, travelling to away matches from the 1950s. Eric was a lone voice throughout season 2007/08, confident that Fulham would not be relegated. He was right! His last away match was to Aston Villa in 2007 and his last home match v Blackburn in 2009. In Fulham's lean times, he said the police were at Craven Cottage to keep the crowd in at half time. When younger he loved playing darts and at one time the Grimwood boys had their own team, based at the local Crabtree Pub. But his favourite pub was always the Golden Lion in Fulham High Street. I used to say he should go on Mastermind, his subject being the Golden Lion 1948-1992. He and I met in 1963. I say it was in the Golden Lion but Eric insisted it was in the Cottage. We married in 1965 and Joanne was born in 1967. Eric was responsible and law-abiding but a softie as a father and later even softer with our cats. He was the practical one and I was admin. Life with him was never boring and although we could disagree, we never went to bed on an argument. Rhyming slang was part of his every day vocabulary and he once puzzled a Cornish friend by saying, “Theres my jam jar down the frog”, (my car down the road). We bought our first property, 34 Vanderbilt Road Earlsfield, in 1975, then moved to 2 Avon Close, Worcester Park, in 1985. He installed kitchens in both houses, built cupboards and proved a capable gardener. He was so resourceful that he would have been the ideal person to be marooned with on a desert island, as he would have enjoyed the challenges of constructing a shelter and survival. Bowling became part of our life when we joined Worcester Park Bowling Club in 1986. He moved to Malden and Coombe (renamed Malden Manor) in 2000 and also bowled for the London Civil Service, Worcester Park British Legion and was an indoor member at King Georges Field, Tolworth. He last bowled in 2004. He was very patriotic and enjoyed military band concerts. He was a great card player and enjoyed hosting weekly cribbage evenings with bowling friends. He liked a small bet for fun on the horses and occasionally on dogs, which he called the little ones without jockeys. He referred to the betting shop as the investment centre. He loved foreign travel. He drove our Beetle car to the South of France in 1982 and in the 1990s drove hire-cars during our many holidays to Florida. He was a social animal - but who would have believed that Eric would have enjoyed performances of ballet and opera? He was not materialistic and didnt own a car until 1967, but he developed an interest in shares after the privatisation of BT. Brothers and nephews were not just relatives they were great friends. He had the ability to get on well with everyone, whatever their age; to nephew Martin he was always “Gris”. It was always interesting to listen to Eric, brother David and nephew Dennis talking about the days in Holyport Road. Like all Grimwood men, Eric was under the impression that he was perfect and, like all Grimwood men, he was not! In recent years ill health limited his activities. Numerous things went wrong with diagnosis and treatment; if anything was going to go wrong then it seemed go wrong for Eric. The lowest point was in late 2007, when he was diagnosed with a secondary tumour, on his liver and it took months before the medics at the Marsden listened to us and conceded that the diagnosis was wrong and the tumour was a benign cyst. He spent 13 weeks in hospital this year. Both he and I felt settled when he moved to Whiteley House, Whiteley Village, where he died on 8 August. Eric was very good natured and always had a twinkle in his eye. But his greatest feature was his sense of humour, which he kept until the end. Thanks Eric for the years together.
