  Notes	This marriage is reported in Walkers Hibernian Magazine, July 1796, p.96. Robert Moore Fishbourne is shown as "Of Moorefield". The marriage is also listed in the IGI without source, for June 29 1792, at St Thomas Dublin, is the subject of a marriage settlement dated 28 June 1792, (291392)and is listed in the Marriage Licence Index for Dublin Diocese. The signatories to the settlement include William Semple, carpenter, and John Semple, bricklayer, the latter probably Lydia's brother. There is no indication that either is Lydia's father. The register of St. Thomas Dublin, 1750-1791 ed. R. Refausse, records the baptisms of Lydia (1766) and her brothers and sisters, the children of John and Lydia Semple. While John's baptism appears in 1763, no William is shown in this immediate family. This suggests that the William Semple in the marriage settlement is either an older brother born and baptised elsewhere, or he may have been a cousin or other relative. The register records the marriage at St Thomas in 1787 of a William Semple and a Mary Ann Darling. The introduction to the printed transcript of the register describes the newly created parish of St Thomas, formed from a part of St Mary's parish. The editor goes on to name some of the well known families in the parish, including "Leading...tradesmen...[such as] the Semple and Darley families, who as bricklayers, builders and architects made such an important contribution to the buildings of Dublin" [p.9] [2]

  Robert Moore Fishbourne was the eldest son of William Fishbourne and Alice Moore. With regard to my own connection with this family,at present there is no proof that Robert Moore Fishbourne was the father or grandfather of Peter Henry Fishbourne my great great Grandfather born 1819. However given the rarity of the name, the fact that both were located in and around Carlow at the right time and that Peter gave his father's name as Robert on his marriage certificate, strongly suggests that they were connected. It seems more likely that Peter was the illigitimate son of Robert (later Rev. Robert) the third son of Robert Moore Fishbourne, born 1800. This would make Robert Moore Fishbourne his grandfather rather than his father. There is also a more tenuous connection through Peter's trade as a coachbuilder, as Robert's family was shown in the 1852 valuations as leasing out a coach factory in Carlow. The Fishbourne family was extensively involved in the provision of coach transport in this part of Ireland. While Peter does not appear to share the comfortable economic status of the family to which Robert Moore Fishbourne belonged, it is of interest to note that Robert Moore Fishbourne's first wife Lydia Semple appears to have been the daughter of a bricklayer or carpenter who had made money building houses in Dublin. (Marriage Settlement 1792) Her death after only two years of marriage enhanced her husband's position financially, just prior to his father's death,which probably occurred in 1796. By 1805, the date of his unproved will, a copy of which is in my possession, Robert was clearly in a very favourable position and certainly appeared to deserve the title "Gentleman" whatever the status of his forebears. No doubt his second marriage in1795 to Catherine Maria Eustace, of the well known Eustace family, had consolidated his position both financially and socially. The Prerogatve Marriage Index shows a licence/settlement dated 30th May 1795, between Robert Moore Fishbourne of Moorfield,Carlow/ Queen's Co. and Catherine Maria Eustace, Parish of Fennah,Diocese of Leighlin, Spinster. Nos. 230, 136 and 149. (?) The Tithe Books show Robert Moore Fishbourne and Samuel Elliot as the Commissioners for Tithes in the Parish of Cloydagh, dated April 25th 1825. A memorial inscription is recorded for Killeshin Parish and Churchyard in Queen's Co. as follows : Here lieth the body of Robert Moore Fishbourne Esq of Hollymount in this County, who departed this life 16 February 1828 aged 62. Also his wife Catherine Maria Fishbourne alias Eustace who departed this life January 23 1835 aged 65 years. There is also a wall plaque in St Mary's Church of Ireland in Carlow, in memory of Robert Moore Fishbourne. It reads as follows: "Erected by the County of Carlow knot of the ancient and most benevolent order of Friendly Brothers of St Patrick, to the memory of Robert Moore Fishbourne Esq. of Hollymount in the Queen's County, as a mark of their brotherly respect for his memory, and regret at the loss sustained by the Society in his lamented death. Obit Feb. 16 1826" This also appears in Irish Memorial Inscriptions, vol.1.p.146. The date should read 1828 to my knowledge. (See Killeshin parish register)
