  The Big Freeze: Man dies on steps of convent There was a chaotic start to the New Year in Norwood - first the big snowstormm and on Wednesday, fog. Traffic slowed to a crawl along icy Church Road, Upper Norwood. Bus drivers often had difficulty controlling their vehicles. Two collided in Robson Road, West Norwood, on Tuesday. One of the driversm Mr Charles Healy, Roper House, Kingswood Estate, West Dulwich, was taken to Dukwich Hospital with a chipped arm bone. A MAN WHO TRUDGED THROUGH SNOW AT STREATHAM COMMON NORTH SIDE ON SUNDAY EVENING, AFTER HE HAD LEFT A BUS WHICH COULD NOT CLIMB THE ICE-COVERED HILL, COLLAPSED AND DIED ON THE STEPS OF ST MICHAEL'S CONVENT. He was Mr Cyril John Burrows, a 43-year old blacksmith, Elder Road, West Norwood. He got off the bus at the bottom of the common and started walking home. At the top of the hill he felt ill and staggered into the convent grounds for help. Nuns came to the door and found him lying on the steps. He died as they carried him into the convent. Mr Burrows was a married man with two children. Bus and train schedules were completely disrupted. The police reported only one serious accident... All local councils employed every available man on clearing the icy roads. Lambeth had a "battalion" of 600 men clearing the 142 miles of road. They used 138 tons of salt, 89 tons of anti-freeze powder and 120 tons of grit. Croydon used "every spare worker" clearing the roads.
