  	The elaborate effigy represents Robert Lord Hungerford clad in a superb suit of fifteenth century plate armour, with the collar of SS. round his neck, and with "his hair polled" in the fashion of Henry V. A superbly decorated sword and dagger hang from his jewelled girdle at his side, while his feet rest upon a dog wearing a rich collar. This monument was placed originally between the Lady Chapel and the (Hungerford) chantry founded by Margaret, his widow. By his will Lord Hungerford directed that his body should be interred before the altar of St. Osmund. The tomb beneath the effigy is made up from portions of the chapel.

  Robert succeeded his father as Lord Hungerford, and was summoned to Parliament from 29 to 33 Henry VI.; he married Margaret, daughter and heir of William Lord Botreaux. Robert married Margaret, the wealthy heiress of William Lord Botreaux. Through his wife's inheritance he added very largely to his family's property in Cornwall. Robert served in the French wars. He was summoned to Parliament as Baron Hungerford for the years 1440-1455. He died on the 14th of May 1459 and was buried, according to his will, in Salisbuty Cathedral. His wife, Margaret, like many widows wanted to prepare herself for her salvation and depicted herslef kneeling in prayer with a Bible on her lap. She completed an almshouse in Heytesbury and founded a chantry chapel in Salisbuty Cathedral where her husband's body was placed. She had been left enormous problems by her husband and an enormous randsom for her son Robert Lord Moleyns (£6000 plus expenses of over £3000, a great deal of money) for his Lancastrian politics, which led to debt and confiscation of the family estates. She herself was imprisoned three times. By sheer tenacity she managed to retain most of the estates by fair means or foul. paying off her husband's debts and religious foundations meant that her expenditure was greater than her income, so she sold lands that should have been her family's inheritance. ROBERT HUNGERFORD, Baron Hungerford (1409-1459), the second but eldest surviving son of Walter, lord Hungerford, served in the French wars, and was summoned to parliament as Baron Hungerford from 5 Sept. 1450 to 26 May 1455. He died 14 May 1459, and in accordance with his will was buried in Salisbury Cathedral (Nicolas Testamenta Vet. p. 294). His son Robert, Lord Moleyns and Hungerford (1431-1464), is noticed separately. Through his mother (Catherine Peverell) and his wife Margaret, the wealthy heiress of William, lord Botreaux, he added very largely to the landed property of his family in Cornwall (Maclean, Trigg Minor, i. 357). His wife lived till 7 Feb. 1478, surviving all her descendants, excepting a great-granddaughter, Mary [see under Hungerford, Robert, 1431-1461]. Her long and interesting will, dated 8 Aug. 1476, is printed in Nicolas's 'Testamenta Vetusta,' pp. 310 sq., and in Hoare's 'Modern Wiltshire, Hundred of Heytesbury.' A list of the heavy expenses she incurred in ransoming her son Robert appears in Dugdale's 'Baronage,' ii. 204 sq. Doüet d'Arcq (Soc. de l'Hist. de France), 1862, ii. 404, iv. 93, vi. 314; Manning's Lives of the Speakers.] Robert Hungerford was the 2nd Baron Hungerford and was married to Margaret Botreaux, the daughter of William Botreaux of the ancient Cornish family of that name. Like his father, he was a staunch supporter of the House of Lancaster and befitted the descendant of a Steward of John of Gaunt and proudly wore the collar of SS's of that House. He was taken prisoner after the battle of Hexham and later beheaded on the 18th May 1459. He was buried in the Hungerford Chapel in Salisbury Cathedral and was succeeded by his son, who was also called Robert.
