  Fanny Eliza Scott died during a single air raid on our village. She and her daughter in law Annie Frances Tanner (nee Russell) also died in the attack. (They're listed on the commonwealth war graves commision as civilian dead and she is buried at Chilham). Story goes that a single German bomber flew over and the local vicar hadn't put up his black out so the bomber flew over again and dropped bombs. One bounced and landed on my grandfathers new home. Fanny died when the water tank was blown up in the air and fell on her. Annie at 8 months pregnant was blown down the bottom of the garden. Grandad and his dad were doing their home guard rounds (they were excluded from doing service because working down the mines they were exempt from service). They came back to find the house torn apart. Grandad had a dog (one of those big mountain type) and the dog kept going down the garden and they found Annie a couple of days later, if they'd gone down earlier they could have saved her. Grandad went on to marry Annie's best friend and had thirteen children.
