  Sir Edward Hungerford sold the estate of Farleigh Hungerford in 1686. He was known as the "Spendthrift" and is said to have wasted £80,000 capital and £14,000 a year income before he died in poverty in 1711. It is perhaps difficult to see how even he with his reputation could have got through a fortune that had taken three centuries to amass but there is a possible, although unsubstantiated theory to explain this. Sir Edward, who is said to have entertained King Charles 11 at Farleigh Castle, fell out of favour when he became a supporter of the Whig party and in 1683 after the discovery of the Rye House plot, Farleigh Castle was raided by government forces who seized arms and ammunition. It would appear from this that Sir Edward was a prime suspect of having been involved in some way with the Monmouth Rebellion as Judge Jefireys and others were sent to the West Country with orders from King James 11 to terrorise the population. All those involved were hanged or deported and those with wealth or estates were told that false witnesses existed who would testify they were seen in the company of Monmouth but for the exchange of a substantial sum of money the evidence could be destroyed and they would escape punishment! In this way Judge Jeffreys extracted £14000 from Edward Prideaux of Forde Abbey near Chard, the king's brother in law is reputed to have received £40,000 out of the sequestered estate of Lord Grey and a certain Hannah Hewling was persuaded to pay £20,000 so that her two brothers would be hanged rather than drawn and quartered. Hence it is not difficult to see that Sir Edward was faced with the same choice he may well have been prepared to sacrifice his remaining wealth and estates in order to escape the gallows and it is significant that the sale of the Farleigh estates took place in 1686 - just one year after the Monmouth rebellion. By 1701 the Castle was a ruin and used as a "quarry" to provide material to build cottages and the Manor House became the seat of the family of Houlton from Trowbridge who had bought the estate in 1730 and it remained in their hands until 1891.
