  This tribute was written by Phyllis' neice, Maureen, and read out at her funeral on January 25th 2010: Phyllis Mary Burbidge was born in New Basford, Nottingham and had one brother Stanley who died in June 1994. Stanley had three children Maureen, Pamela and Ian and therefore Phyllis was their Auntie. They lived on Egypt Road then moved to Liddington Street before progressing to Barlock Road. Phyllis and Stanley enjoyed a very happy childhood and enjoyed holidays with their cousin John at Mr & Mrs Hill's farm at Chapel-St-Leonards in the days before the caravan invasion. Phyllis went in the sea with cousin John and came out saying "Mother I have gone blue!" Phyllis was baptised at Chelsea Street Baptist Church on Sunday January 27th 1935 and joined the church on Sunday February 3rd of the same year. On July 22nd 1930 she left the Haydn Road Council School with flying colours- top of the class, then went onto the Gregg School for secretarial and business training and again passed with honours. In those days you had to buy all your own pens, pencils, paper and books also you had fees to pay, but this set Phyllis up for life. She then gained a diploma for shorthand and was able to promote herself in the working environment. In 1931 she was employed as a shorthand typist and book keeper at Chapman & Watson Limited and left in 1938 to work at Whitworth & Eccleston - Solicitors and had nearly ten happy years as head cashier dealing with trust accounts, income tax and mortgages - hence the way she did here own, and our tax returns right up to this year! Phyllis then moved to Nottingham City Education Authority and worked for Miss Beard, eventually becoming a Local Government Officer, and retired on December 31st 1976. From the 1940's, and for over thirty years, Phyllis was a member of the Nottingham Harmonic Society and sang Handle's Messiah, Faust and numerous other concerts staged at the Albert Hall in Nottingham. In 1980 Phyllis went on holiday to Jersey and there she met her beloved John. They married in 1981 and she became a Berrett, also gaining a loving step-daughter, Angela, and sister-in law, Muriel. Phyllis and John shared a wonderful life together visiting Canada in May 1984 and going on Concord for John's 80th birthday. They enjoyed holidays in Scotland, the Isle of Man, the Isles of Scilly, Cornwall, Devon, Paris, Norway... the list is endless! In 1986 Phyllis won a highly commended rosette for her small cakes. Phyllis and John were just six weeks short of a Silver Wedding Anniversary, as John died in 2006. Phyllis was very proud to be a Berrett and had lots of happy times with Muriel, Linda, Angela, Colin, Jonathan, Lucinda, Ben and Lucas. But Phyllis still enjoyed life going to Carewatch meetings with her friends at Castle Gate on a Tuesday, going to church when she could until her sciatica let her down, and then she took part in church services via the television. She still enjoyed her holidays as she went on a houseboat with Maureen and Tom (which was quite an experience on water but not going anywhere). But her favourite holidays were on the Isle of Wight at Clive and Sue's holiday site in a chalet with Eve and Tony next door, Lyn up the field, Maureen and Tom in their caravan and Pete and Vi in theirs. And what a view, straight off the cliff edge to the sea and little boats, we had gardens around the caravans and lots of BBQ's and games at night. Two years ago it was Pete and Vi's 25th Wedding Anniversary and we BBQ'd for nearly 20 people, young and not so young. Phyllis lapped it up! Last April we visited Paul and Sue at Cromer and we went to Sherringham Park but, because Phyllis could not walk very far we hired an electric buggy - which she took to like a duck to water! We walked and she rode. When we had walked for about 45 minutes, we shouted to Phyllis that when she got to the cattle grid she should turn round and come back. So she stuck it in reverse backed up the bank, put it in first and off she went. Thought she was on the Grand Prix!!! It was while we were at Cromer that Lucinda, Angela and Colin visited along with baby Lucas and we spent a lovely day together. Our last visit to the Isle of Wight was her last holiday and it was wonderful with lots of happy memories as Phyllis, for the last three years, has spent her birthdays on the Isle. A wonderful life of 93 and a half years, she was a very special lady and many people of all ages will miss her greatly. BERRETT Phyllis Mary Passed away on the 9th of January aged 93 and a half at The Queens Medical Centre. Auntie to Maureen, Pamela and Ian. Re-united with husband John, peace after pain. Funeral to take place at Mansfield Road Baptist Church, Monday 25th of January at 12:30pm, Bramcote Crematorium at 14:00. Family flowers only, donations made payable to Cancer Research or Diabetes UK. Care of Baguley Brothers, 500 Mansfield Road, Sherwood, Nottingham, NG5 2FB. BERRETT Phyllis Mary. I have not just lost my auntie I have lost part of me. You were so much a part of my life and of Tom's. I will miss your love, guidance our special Mondays, holidays in the caravan at Cromer and The Isle Of White also holidays on the boat. Thank you for always been there for me. I love you.
