After Fred's death the house was sold, and the land which held the garage and side garden was sold for development. 31 Bexhill is now described as a 'mid terrace' as an additional house has been added between 31 and the railway line!   Memories of Great Aunt Ada by her great niece Maureen Grimwood nee Fowler Both my daughter Joanne (born 1967) and I loved Aunt Ada. She was always interested in anyone in the extended family and played quite a part in all our lives. If she wrote you a letter, there were few full stops and one ended up out of breath after reading it. When we started taking Joanne to football matches (Fulham FC), Aunt Ada wrote me a concerned but loving letter saying we had to really look after Joanne as she was worried about the behaviour of bovver boys. I thought it comical that she used the term, 'bovver boys'. She, and her sister Lil, were very forthright (their sister Flo was gentler) and one was always aware of their opinions. (My husband Eric used to say that the volume got louder and louder as they spoke!). They often fell out but soon made it up. The sisters both had a very good sense of humour. For some reason, Ada would never play cards on a Sunday. She and Lil were very close to their brother Ted Berrett. He lived in lodgings in Coulsden with a couple, with whom Ada maintained contact after his death. Ada registered his death (1952) and did the probate return. Unlike Lil, she kept in contact with Ted's children. She even kept in contact with Ted's wife; I remember them saying they visited her in the early 1970s wheras I had always been assumed he was a widower. My cousins, Kath and Sue, Linda and Linda's maternal cousin Angela, have all said that the one person we'd have hated to admit to a pregnancy before marriage would have been Aunt Ada, as she would have been so disappointed and critical. But, knowing what we know now, she could have been very sympathetic. Ada was always generous at birthdays and Christmas. When I was about 9 or 10 and said I'd like a set of skittles for Christmas she at once said shed get them as my present. I remember once she gave me a heavy medallion necklace for my birthday, when medallion necklaces were in vogue. When Eric and I said we were getting married, she announced that she would buy us a stainless steel teapot (the latest in teapots in 1965!). How I learnt about the existence of Ronnie Freeman by Maureen Grimwood nee Fowler In 1992, I was helping my maternal aunt, Violet (Babs) Bessent nee Stevens, to sort out her finances. Her husband Bill had recently died and she wanted to see whether she had sufficient cash to pay for the rewiring of her house, the electricity company having declared her wiring dangerous. She suddenly disclosed to me that her maternal aunt Ada Pullen had given birth to a son before marriage. Babs' story was that the father of Ada's son Ronnie was a foreman at a laundry and that Ada used to go to court on Fridays to collect maintenance for Ronnie. Ada and Ronnie had lived with the Stevens family, at 5 Meon Road, South Acton, until he was three. Quite how they fitted into the upper floor of 5 Meon Road is debatable; there was Lil and husband Jim, daughters Phyllis (born 2/11/09) and Babs (born 12/2/11) apart from Ada and Ronnie. The rented flat would have consisted of a front reception room, back bedroom, living room, scullery/kitchen and inside wc. Ronnie was then adopted by a couple from up the road. There were so many small laundries in South Acton that the area was known as 'soapsud island'. Babs said they used to see Ronnie in the street and their mother, Lil, would say, “That's your cousin, Ronnie”. The dates don't quite add up if one accepts Babs' memory of him being three when he was fostered - Ronnie was born 27/8/11 and Ada married her cousin, Fred Pullen, whose family ran a laundry, on 15/6/13. My theory that Ronnie was fostered because Ada's husband would not take on Ronnie, would also be in doubt if one accepts Babs version. Lil and her children Babs, Dick (born 1914) and Len (born 1917) stayed in Meon Road until 1938. Jim, a storeman for the London bus company (pre London Transport), had left the home and Lil sometime before, certainly before Phyls wedding in 1933, to live with a bus conductress in the Tolworth area. After the bus conductress died, Jim bought a house at 22 Elmdene, Malden Manor, Tolworth in 1938 and asked Lil to be his housekeeper. This she did, and the three unmarried children joined them. In time, the three children all married. In 1952 Babs and her husband Bill bought 8 Vyner Road, East Acton. Jim sold 22 Elmdene and he and Lil moved in with Babs and Bill, 1952/3. One day, Ronnie was apparently working next door to Lil, Babs and Bill, at 10 Vyner Road, and recognised Lil. Possibly the neighbour had referred to Mrs Stevens and daughter Babs and it jogged his memory or maybe Lil and Babs recognised his decorating name-board and they were the ones who made the enquiry. They invited him in for a cup of tea; he mentioned that he had 12 children and lived in White City (sic). They told Ada and asked her whether she would like to meet him but she declined. I guess that having lived a lie for so long she felt she couldn't cope with the disclosure; times are so different now. Babs said that Fred and Roy, Ada's sons, didn't know of Ron's existence but that Fred's wife Marjorie did. Ada and Marjorie werent that close so how Marjorie knew is another mystery. Babs and I agreed that it was very sad that Ada had never acknowledged her 12 grandchildren as she loved children and was always a very generous and interested aunt/great aunt. (Although both of her other sons married, neither had any any children so we always thought Ada had no grandchildren.) I didn't tell anyone until I mentioned the story to Linda Dutton, who was doing the family tree. I didn't want to embarrass Ada's son Fred (I saw him regularly). I was never in contact with Roy, who lived in Spain. It never seemed opportune to raise the subject with Babs, who I visited regularly but could be non-approachable. After Fred's death, I asked two of my cousins, Sue Horn and Kath Halling, who'd also been close to Babs, whether they knew about Ronnie. They didn't and nor did Monica, Fred's great friend and neighbour in Bexhill Road, East Sheen. My mother would never have told me about Ronnie. She didn't even mention that her father Jim had lived with another woman, only that he and Lil didnt get on so they separated until he bought a house at Malden Manor in 1938 Fred Pullen junior disclosed that the other woman had been a bus conductress when Kath and I asked him about the break in Lil and Jim's marriage.
