  Sir Walter was granted land by Edward VI in 1552 and was restored by Queen Mary to the confiscated estate of Farleigh Hungerford in 1554 when the attainder on his father was reversed. In 1570 he charged his second wife with attempts to poison him during 1564, and with committing adultery with William Darrell of Littlecote between 1560 and 1568. Lady Hungerford was acquitted. Hungerford, refusing to pay the heavy costs, was committed to the Fleet. He left property to his half-brother Edward, with the remainder to his heirs by his mistress, Margery Brighte, whom he married bigamously in the last year of his life. He died in 1595, with no legitimate heirs, thus ending the Heytesbury-Hungerford line. Sir Walter and his second wife Anne Dormer, had a turbulent relationship. In 1570 Walter accused Anne of adultery and also of trying to poison him in 1564, presumably unsuccessfully as he waited six years to point the finger. Anne was acquitted but Walter was a sore loser and refused to pay his legal costs which saw him incarcerated in the Fleet Prison. Anne settled in Belgium where she petitioned for her children, concerned that her revengeful husband would disinherit them. Following the death of his son, Walter left his property to his brother Sir Edward with remainder to his sons by his mistress.
