  Letter received from Vic and Doris Berrett, addressed to John and Honor Berrett and dated April 2nd 1986. 272 - 5000 Dalhousie Dr NW, Calgary, Alberta T3A 1B3 Dear John and Honor Thank you both for your letters which we received on March 7th which was a pleasant surprise, as was the visit by Charles and his daughter. [Charles was Honor's brother-in-law]. Firstly, let me explain the typed letter - although I was able to write with a pen up to about 7 years ago, I found that I cannot grip a pen and, although I can play the organ, I have to use a typewriter for writing letters. Poor Aunt Ada used to say that she enjoyed my letters as they were easy to read. Unfortunately, not being a very good typist, it takes me a long time to write a letter. However, I am going to have a go, so now I have to think what I can say. I suppose I should update you as to why we emigrated to Canada in 1980. You know that my sister, Vera, married a Canadian soldier in 1946, and had two daughters, Lynn and Carol. In 1966 she came over to England and told my son Colin about life in Canada, and within 6 months he decided to emigrate to Canada. He married a Canadian girl, Nancy, and they have two sons, Ryan age 7 (on 30/3/86) and Mark who will be 4 on July 12th. After I retired in June 1978 (my sister died the following October) and when Ryan was born in 1979, Colin and Nancy came over to England with 6 month old baby Ryan. After they returned we decided that we would like to see our gradson grow up, so we decided to sell up and come to Canada. Have got used to the winters here (at the moment it is snowing, which is not unual in April), but we look forward to summer which can bring very hot days, sometimes in the 90s. Now, John, I am looking forward to getting your tape, and possibly I can tell you all about myself on a tape from us. We were trying to work out when you came to see us in Cousldon and I don't know what year it was, but Colin remembered that we had a Austin Mini and that he went down to Coulsden South station to meet you from Redhill. Now Honor, the only thing that I can remember about you is when my Father brought me over to Hammersmith to 66 Overstone Road and that you lived in the top flat, and I believe your hair was in pigtails. I remember your father (my Uncle Fred) and he was thin and tall. Your mother was known as Maud Bell to distinguish her from my other aunt Maud Berrett (sister to Aunt Ada etc.) About my wife Doris and myself, we are living a full and busy life. We belong to a club for the over 60s and every Tuesday we go there to play Matt Bowling [carpet bowls], and on Thursdays we attend a class to make ceramics. At home I keep busy making wine for ourselves and also for Colin and Nancy as they do a lot of entertaining. Meant to tell you about Colin - he is working for an Oil company and early this year he was promoted and he is now a Vice President and also is the Company Secretary. Although money is a little tight as the only source of income us our Social Security pensions from England (which was frozen from 1980) and also my pension from the company I worked for in England for 42 years, we scrape along. Fortunately, I had a house to sell before we came to Canada, which enabled us to buy this mobile house and furnish it. The balance of the money we invested and this gives us a monthly interest which supplements our pensions. Well, I warned you that I was a poor typist, so hope you will forgive the mistakes and also I should have told you that I am lazy, so to avoid typing two letters, I have made a carbon copy. Have not seen Charles since he came in February, but as soon as the weather improves I will phone him and call on him in Okotokos, which is about three quarters of an hour run from Calgary.
