  Thomas was a member of the Australian National Antarctic Research Expedition 1954-55 Renowned WA writer T.A.G Hungerford, author of classics such as the autobiographical Stories from Suburban Road and the World War II masterpiece The Ridge and the River, died early this morning [20/6/11]. He was 96. Hungerford was born in 1915 and grew up in South Perth. He served in the Australian Army during World War Two, after which he became a press secretary for Billy Hughes. He then became a journalist, later working as a press secretary for John Tonkin and Sir Charles Court. Throughout his long life Hungerford published novels, short stories, plays, journalism and poetry. He was made a member of the Order of Australia for services to Australian literature in 1987 and won the Patrick White Award in 2002. The T.A.G Hungerford Award for an unpublished manuscript is named in his honour.
