  Alleged theft of jam rolls A 10 year old St Pauls Cray schoolboy was charged with stealing a jam roll, value sixpence, from a United Dairies cart at St Pauls Cray on March 7th. William Joseph Dutton, age 25, from Lodge Crescent, Orpington, an Inspector of Milk Salesman employed by the United Dairies, said that at 1:10 PM on March 7th he left his cart in Broomwood Road,St Pauls Cray to deliver to some customers. He saw the boy at the cart and when he shouted at him the boy threw a jam roll into the cart. The witness chased him but was unable to catch him. In reply to the boys father, the witness agreed he did not see the boy take the roll and it might have fallen from the cart. Detective Hine said that, when arrested at school, the boy said “Yes, I took it and put it back”. The case was dismissed. The boy was told by the chairman that the trouble would not have arisen if he had not run away.
