Token of Thomas Dutton of Witney c 1655 - 2
Tokens provide evidence of the growing importance of Witney's woollen industry in the mid-17th century, as many of them are stamped with motifs associated with the industry, such as shuttles, fleeces and woolpacks, the leopard's heads of the Blanket Weaver's Company and the clothmaker's arms. The merchant's mark and woolsack are evidence that Thomas Dutton was a wool merchant in Witney in the mid-17th century.t necessarily for spending just in the shop of the issuing trader, but it was up to each shopkeeper to decide whether he or she accepted another tradesman's token. They provide valuable records of men and women engaged in different trades in towns, and often one side has the official arms of the tradesman's guild or company.
